Winter Solstice + Stillness

Happy winter solstice! Today is the shortest day of 2014, we can feel happy that every day for the rest of the year will be a little bit brighter + longer!

The winter solstice marks our bodies natural inclination to pause, reflect and turn inwards. How can we honor this time of quietness? Take time for contemplation. Especially leading up to the hustle of the holidays; set time aside just for yourself. Give yourself permission to relax, refresh, perhaps stay close to home this week.

Just as we do in shivasana, allow your body to sink down a little more, breathing in deep and full breaths to quiet the mind and heart. Simply be present and find joy the silence.

If you find yourself unable to quiet the mind, perhaps this focus trick I learned will help...

While in India, Swami Prabodh taught meditation techniques to help us focus in our daily meditation practice. He asked us "how can we create silence?... how does one make silence?...it is impossible to make an absence of sound and thought. But, when we repeat the mantra Om ओम Om ओम Om ओम ... that there between the Oms, we can find stillness."

What is the sound between the Om ओम?
Tranquility.
