Winter Wellness

As we approach the colder months we can be more inclined to curl up on the couch and push fitness (mental and physical) goals out towards the warmer months, and that CAN be do-able if you are listening to what your body needs and nourishing it with real, whole & seasonal foods. But hibernation isn't  the full scope of how our bodies like to enjoy winter- the brisk feeling of wind on the face, the cold air in the lungs. If we're properly dressed, getting outside to enjoy the season can be as rewarding for our mind as our bodies.

Planning time with friends can be a saving grace in the greyer months, moving bodies and enjoying the weather with warm soups and teas, warming up the body and keeping the mind active.

I've taken to making Indian Rasam, a thin soup prepared with ghee and tamarind seasoning as base, with the addition of tomato, chili pepper, pepper, cumin and other spices as seasonings. This warming soup gets better the longer it sits, making it the perfect thing to make in large batches and reheat on chilly evenings

I learned how to make rasam while in Mysore, India this past summer- I've had good luck recreating* it based on the Tomato Rasam recipe from this lovely site Veg Recipes of India.

*If you're living in South Korea, you can easily find the spices in the Foreign Food marts in Itaewon, Seoul or ordering from Expat Mart- great shipping and English customer service, too.
